Manelwatta, Nagananda International Buddhist University was founded by Dr. Bodagama Chandima Nahimi. He initiated the Manelwatta Nagananda International Buddhist University by making a significant investment for the development and improvement of Buddhist education. He provided the necessary facilities for higher education opportunities and did not stop there. He introduced the Bodagama Chandima Nahimi Scholarship Foundation for the benefit of all the monks and nuns who are eligible for higher education in our country but lack the means to pursue their higher studies.
Consequently, a scholarship program was also initiated for another segment of students to access post-graduate courses, graduate courses, diploma and certificate courses. Thus, a scholarship scheme annually provides grants to all low-income students through a selection process.
This scholarship facilitates nuns from across the world to study the graduate course in Buddhist studies in residence. The Buddhasravika Scholarship Scheme conducts interviews based on identified criteria and selects the candidates. Residential facilities, catering facilities, free course fees, bursaries, healthcare and insurance facilities are provided completely free of charge to the selected nuns. So far, two batches have been recruited under this scheme. This programme will be implemented on an yearly basis.
With the aim of expanding the higher education opportunities of the monks & nuns living in Sri Lanka, this scholarship program is implemented for the clergy who complete the piriven education or oriental examinations to study the graduate course in Buddhist studies. Full or partial scholarships are provided for pursuing an Honors degree in Buddhist Studies.
Through this scholarship program, it is expected to provide full or partial scholarships for children who have lost the opportunity to pursue a higher education. Scholarships are given for pursuing advanced courses and graduate courses. In addition, necessary school equipment and facilities are provided to school children. Ten full scholarships are also awarded annually to each faculty of the university.
